Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry refers to the branch of dentistry focused on sedating patients during procedures. At Dr. Lewis’ office, we focus on two types of sedation used, depending on the needs of each of our patients and the demands of the procedure that is being performed.
Laughing Gas Dentistry
Laughing gas is a gas that is inhaled via a mask. This mild sedation is an ideal way to help a patient relax and works well for simple procedures.
IV Sedation Dentistry
IV sedation brings on a deeper level of sedation. The patient is conscious but unaware of the procedure. IV sedation is helpful for long and complicated procedures or for someone with severe phobias.
Benefits of Our Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry is helpful in so many ways:
- Helps dentists to perform more dental procedures in one session. If a person needs to get fillings in more than one tooth, it can be difficult for a patient to book several appointments. With proper sedation, all can be accomplished in one visit.
- Helps patients with dental phobias or anxiety. Studies show that 9% – 20% of Americans avoid going to the dentist due to dental phobia, but sedation dentistry is ideal for calming the nerves.
- Enables those with low pain threshold to get normal procedures. Some people are much more sensitive even for simple treatments like a cleaning.
- Complete long procedures. Without sedation dentistry, long procedures would be a difficult and painful process.
