Which Type of Sedation Dentistry Should I Choose?
There is a wide range of options involved in sedation dentistry. If this is something you are interested in, then your dentist will provide you with a thorough consultation to ensure the correct method for your situation. Below are three different forms of dental sedation.
- Inhalation Sedation (or Laughing Gas). This form includes nitrous oxide and oxygen that is breathed in through a mask covered over the patient’s nose. It is used to allow patients to be completely relaxed during procedures or appointments with the dentist.
- Oral Conscious Sedation. Your dentist can provide you with oral conscious sedation in the form of a pill. They will prescribe you with this medication and advise you to take the pill an hour prior to your procedure or appointment. Your dentist may choose this option for your situation to provide you with a relaxed state of mind but still conscious and aware of what is going on.
- IV Sedation. This option is used during procedures and allows the patient to be in an unconscious state for a period of time. A dental anesthesiologist will provide this form of dental sedation and monitor you throughout the procedure. Additional medication is typically used to reverse its effects.
