Dental Sedation Options And Their Benefits

Dental sedation is offered by most dentists as a solution to fear of dental procedures. However, the type of sedation dentistry to be administered depends on the level of fear and anxiety. Several types of dental sedation allow mild to deep sedation in order for patients to undergo necessary procedures without the paralyzing fear for dental treatments and dentists

Types of dental sedation

  1. Inhaled Sedation – Laughing Gas
  2. This mainly relies on the use of nitrous oxide (laughing gas). This gas helps patients to relax and dentists have control over the level of sedation. Though it wears off quickly, the patient relaxes enough for common procedures and regular checkups.

  3. Oral Sedation
  4. This type of dental sedation makes the patient a little drowsy allowing for minimal or moderate sedation depending on the patient’s needs. Patients remain awake during the entire procedure.

  5. Moderate IV sedation
  6. It mainly involves delivery of a fast acting sedative intravenously. The dentist adjusts the level of sedation accordingly in order to maintain a moderate level of sedation.

  7. General anesthesia
  8. This type of sedation provides the deepest sedation levels making the patient totally unconscious during dental procedure. General anesthesia is mainly used during advanced dental procedures or on patients who have severe dental phobia.

Dental phobias and anxiety are common barriers when it comes to maintaining good dental health. Extreme anxiety makes most patients avoid regular checkups and necessary dental procedures which has a negative impact on their dental hygiene. Therefore, doctors and dentists recommend psychological and pharmacological alternatives for coping with dental phobia.
